Action Sports Photography
Outdoor action photography for people who push limits.
You don't train in a gym with perfect lighting. You climb real rock, run real trails, ride real mountains. Your photos should reflect that reality—the effort, the conditions, the places that challenge you.
I photograph people the way they actually are—on routes, on trails, in the mountains. No staged shots in controlled environments. No artificial lighting. Just you doing what you love in the conditions you face.
Whether you need action shots for your own inspiration, portraits that capture who you are in your element, or comprehensive coverage of your adventure, I document real effort in real places across the Bay Area and beyond.
How Action Sports Photography Sessions Work
From first contact to final gallery, here's what to expect when you book an action sports photography session with me.
Before the Session
We'll talk about your sport, what you're hoping to capture, and the locations or routes you want to shoot. I'll help plan logistics—timing, access, weather windows, and what kind of coverage makes sense for your goals.
What we'll discuss:
Your sport and experience level
What you want to do with the images (personal inspiration, social media, gifts, prints)
Location and route selection
Best conditions and timing
Safety considerations and backup plans
Any specific shots you're hoping for
During the Session
This isn't a photoshoot—it's documentation of your actual effort.
We might:
Shoot you on your project climb
Document a full day in the mountains
Capture you on familiar terrain
Follow you through a multi-pitch route
Track you on singletrack descents
You set the pace. If you need rest between burns, perfect. If conditions change, we adapt. If you're not feeling it, we reschedule. The goal is authentic moments of effort, focus, and the joy of doing what you love—not forced performance for the camera.
I position myself strategically, anticipate moments, and stay out of your way. You climb, run, ride, or ski the way you normally would. I capture it.
After the Session
Within 2-3 weeks, you'll receive your private online gallery with 20+ professionally edited high-resolution images (Standard Session), 40+ images (Half-Day Session), or 60+ images (Full-Day Session). All images include full print rights for personal use.
You can download, share, print, and use them however you want. These are your images to celebrate what you do and who you are.
Why People Choose Outdoor Action Photography
Real Conditions, Real Effort
Studio shots and controlled environments can't capture what it actually feels like to be on the sharp end, grinding up a climb, or railing a corner. Outdoor action photography shows the real conditions, the real effort, and the authentic moments that define your passion.
Dynamic Locations, Not Fake Backdrops
Your photos feature the actual places you train and play—Castle Rock's granite, the Marin Headlands singletrack, Sierra alpine routes, coastal trail systems. The landscape isn't just a backdrop—it's part of your story.
I Understand the Sports
I climb, backpack, and explore the same terrain. I know how to position safely, when to shoot, and what moments matter. You're not explaining your sport to someone with a camera—you're working with someone who gets it.
Photos That Actually Capture Who You Are
Whether you're sharing on social media, printing for your wall, giving as gifts, or simply celebrating what you do, these photos serve a purpose. They show you doing what you love, where you love to do it.

Why Choose Me for Your Sports Photography
I'm an outdoor enthusiast, not just a photographer. I know Bay Area crags, trail systems, and mountain routes. I understand how to move safely in technical terrain while carrying camera gear.
I work with your effort, not against it. No staged poses, no interrupting your flow. If you're on route, I'm shooting. If you need to rest, I reposition. Natural moments of effort and joy are what make compelling images.
I care about the places we photograph. I follow Leave No Trace principles, respect access rules, and help people enjoy these places responsibly while creating powerful images.
I get what makes action shots work. Clean backgrounds, dynamic angles, authentic effort, proper lighting. Whether you're sharing on Instagram or printing for your wall, I understand what makes an image powerful.
Choosing your Location
The best location is wherever you feel most confident and stoked.
For most people, that's the trails, crags, or routes they already know and love. Familiarity breeds confidence, and confidence shows in the photos. If you lap a specific DH trail every weekend, run the same loop religiously, or have a home crag you know intimately—those are probably perfect.
But if you want to shoot somewhere special—a bucket-list route, a destination trail, a Sierra objective—we can absolutely make that happen.
During our consultation, we'll discuss your regular spots, your goals for the images, and current conditions. I know Bay Area and Sierra terrain well, so I can make recommendations based on your sport and what you're hoping to capture.
The goal: shoot you where you feel like yourself, not where looks cool but feels forced.
What to Wear for Sports Photography Photos
One of the most common questions: "Should I wear specific gear for photos?" Here's what actually matters:
Simple guidance:
Wear what you normally wear—authenticity beats aesthetics
Solid colors photograph better than busy patterns
Avoid logos unless you want them featured
Consider visibility—bright colors pop against rock/trail/snow
Bring layers for changing conditions
Pack backup kit in case something gets damaged
I'll send you sport-specific guidance once you book.

Weather and conditions are part of action sports. Light rain or clouds often create dramatic images. But if conditions are unsafe or truly unworkable, we'll reschedule at no charge. I monitor forecasts and will reach out in advance if I have concerns.
-
Both. It depends on the sport and situation. For climbing, I might shoot from the ground, adjacent routes, or rappel in to get specific angles. For trail running/biking, I position strategically along the route and might run/bike short sections to reposition. We'll discuss logistics beforehand.
-
Absolutely. Some of the best images come from attempts, effort, and the process—not just the success. We can shoot attempts, rests, and the full experience.
-
Standard turnaround is 2-3 weeks. You'll receive a link to your private online gallery where you can view, download, and share all your high-resolution images. Rush delivery (5-7 days) is available for $200 if needed.

The goal isn't perfection—it's authentic documentation. Some of the most powerful images come from hard efforts and real moments. Determination and genuine effort make compelling photos.
-
Absolutely! These sessions are for people who love these sports, regardless of skill level. Whether you're climbing 5.7 or 5.12, running your first trail race or your hundredth ultra, the images capture your genuine effort and passion.
