Most couples photography lives at the edges of bigger life events — engagement, wedding, pregnancy, the moments that come with a built-in announcement. The work I do here is different. It's couples photography for its own sake.

Anniversary sessions for couples who've been together long enough to have stories. Milestone sessions for the ones marking something specific — a move, a job change, a shared decision, a year that mattered. Just-because sessions for the couples who realized they don't have any good photos of themselves together since the wedding day, or before, or ever.

The format is the same in every case: time outdoors at a Bay Area location chosen for the two of you, natural light, no heavy direction, candid moments captured as they happen alongside the more composed frames. You leave with a gallery of images that feel like the actual relationship rather than a performance of one.

Anniversaries, milestone moments, and the kind of just-because session that turns into your favorite photos on the wall.

How Couples Sessions Work

From first contact to final gallery, here's what to expect when you book a couples session with me.

Before the Session

We'll talk about what you want these photos to capture — the season of your relationship, what you'll do with the images, and locations that fit the two of you.

What we'll discuss:

  • What you'll use the photos for (prints for the wall, holiday cards, gifts for family, shared socials, or just for you)

  • The mood you're after (relaxed, playful, intimate, editorial)

  • Locations that mean something to you, or that match the aesthetic you want

  • What to wear — I'll send a style guide once you book that covers both of you

  • Any specific shots you have in mind, or details you'd like included

During the Session

We meet at the location, walk through it, and shoot. No stiff posing — the work is mostly about catching real moments between the two of you while we move through the location together. Some quieter composed frames as well, but the candid work tends to be what people love most.

After the Session

Sneak peeks in a few days - A handful of edited highlights to share with family, post if you want to, or just keep for yourselves while the rest of the gallery is being prepared.

A full gallery in two weeks- A private online gallery with edited high-resolution images, ready to download, print, or share. Personal-use license included.

Why People Choose Outdoor Couples Photography

Natural light is the most flattering light there is

Studio flash flattens. Natural light wraps. Shooting outdoors at the right time of day — golden hour, soft morning light, open shade — produces portraits that are genuinely flattering without looking retouched.

Beautiful locations, not generic backdrops

Your photos feature Bay Area gardens, coastlines, parks and open spaces — places that look like somewhere, not a grey studio wall.

I'll guide you through it

You don't need to know how to pose. I'll give you direction throughout — where to stand, where to look, how to move — so you can relax and let the session flow.

Photos worth printing and sharing

Prints for the wall, holiday cards, gifts for parents and grandparents, anniversary keepsakes, shared social posts. Natural outdoor portraits last in a way studio shots don't — they capture the relationship, not just the likeness.

Session Options for Couples

Three session lengths for couples — choose based on how much variety you want.

  • Standard — 60 minutes. One beautiful location. Ideal for an anniversary, a milestone, or a just-because session that doesn't take over your weekend.

  • Extended — 90 minutes. The most popular couples choice — two locations and an unhurried pace, with room for both candid energy and composed portraits.

  • Full-Day Story — 6–8 hours. A full day across locations and moods — for major milestones or the full story, start to finish.

Why Choose Me for Your Couples Portraits

I know how to use natural light to flatter. Studio flash is harsh and flat. Natural light — the right time of day, the right position, open shade or golden hour — wraps around a subject in a way that's genuinely flattering. I shoot outdoors because it produces better portraits, not just more scenic ones.

I'll guide you through the whole session. You don't need to know how to pose. I'll give you direction throughout — where to stand, where to look, how to move — so you're never left wondering what to do. Most people are surprised by how relaxed it feels once we get started.

I keep things relaxed but productive. A typical session produces more usable images than most photographers deliver in twice the time, without ever feeling rushed. We move through locations naturally, capture real moments as they happen, and you leave with genuine variety rather than fifteen versions of the same shot.

I understand what makes photos work in the real world. Clean backgrounds, natural expressions, flattering light, real interaction between the two of you. The kind of photos you'll still want on your wall in ten years — not just the ones that look good this week.

Best South Bay & Peninsula Locations for Couples Sessions

I know the Bay Area's gardens, parks, and coastal spots inside and out. Here are some favorites for couples sessions:

For parks and gardens

  • Gamble Garden, Palo Alto — wisteria, rose beds and spring blossoms at their best in March and April. Free entry, no permit required, beautiful year-round.

  • San Jose Rose Garden — 189 varieties of roses across formal beds, at their peak May through October. Free entry, easy parking.

  • Filoli, Woodside — one of the Bay Area's most beautiful formal gardens, stunning year-round with something different every season. Entry fee applies; I hold a membership covering guests.

  • Stanford campus — architecture, open lawns, shaded colonnades and the extraordinary cactus garden. Varied backdrops all within walking distance of each other.

  • Villa Montalvo - estate grounds with mature trees, open lawns and architectural backdrops. Permit required; fee passed through to client.

For coastal settings

  • Wilder Ranch, Santa Cruz — historic ranch buildings set against coastal bluffs and wildflower meadows right at the water's edge. Flat and accessible with no hiking required.

  • Half Moon Bay — rugged Pacific cliffs, soft coastal light and wide open sky. Accessible from the car park.

  • Pescadero and Bean Hollow — quieter and less visited than Half Moon Bay, with beautiful rock formations and consistently good light.

For something more distinctive

  • Dumbarton Bridge Shoreline Trail, Newark — graffiti walls, razor wire fencing, weathered industrial structures and wide-open bay views. Striking editorial backdrops that produce images unlike anything from a garden or park. Best on overcast days.

  • Alviso Marina, San Jose — abandoned boats, salt ponds, rusted infrastructure and enormous open sky. Moody and atmospheric, particularly at golden hour when the light hits the water.

  • Niles Canyon Railway, Fremont — vintage rail cars, Victorian-era station buildings and period details that suit a completely different aesthetic. Perfect if you want something with a nostalgic or editorial feel.

Not sure which location fits your vibe? During our consultation, I'll recommend 2-3 options based on your personality, the mood you're after, and what you want to do with the images.

What to Wear for Couples Sessions

One of the most common questions I get — and one of the easiest to answer. You don't need to buy anything new or stress about getting it perfectly coordinated.

A few things that help: earth tones, blues, greens, creams and rust all sit well in natural settings. Coordinate, don't match — you'll both be in the frame together, so complementary tones work better than identical outfits. Avoid busy patterns or large logos.

Sessions take place on paths, in gardens and at accessible locations, so wear what feels good rather than what looks rugged. Heels and dresses work as easily as boots and jeans. Bring one or two options each if you want variety across the gallery.
